To talk about hair transplant techniques, we have to understand hair loss usually begins gradually in youth, the relationship man-woman is approximately 80-20% due to hormonal factors (testosterone lost in men). There are cases such as those of etiology post-traumatic (burns) or post-surgical, fortunately they are the minority.
There are 2 main hair transplant techniques:
HAIR TRANSPLANT TECNHNIQUE 1: FOLICULAR UNITS EXTRACTION
The Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant technique is much newer and more recent.
It took as a basis a proven method like the FUT (Follicular Units Transplant) and was perfected. Now is faster, less invasive and safe with excellent results. Essentially the FUE hair transplant method consists of:
First. The follicle is removed manually with incredible precision and leaving a minimum wound. The incision will be completely healed and will fully disappear between seven to ten days following.
Second. It will proceed to the opening of channels in which later the follicular units removed will be implanted.
Third. The implantation of follicular units begins, normally, from the front line of the hair back. We are cautious to professionally define a natural design of this front line taking into account your physiognomy and age to give the feeling of naturalness.
Fourth. The implantation of the follicles is done manually one by one. This way you get a natural look, which follows the original line of movement and hair shape.
This process takes 7 to 10 hours, depending on the amount of follicles transplanted and the size area where they are placed. It is practically painless, local anesthesia is applied in the area and the person will not feel any type of discomfort.
Recovery is almost immediate, after 48 hours the person can return to daily activities with normality. In a little over a week, the healing process is completed and the inflammation disappears.
The drawback is that FUE is recommended for small areas, this is approximately 1000 units. This, does not cover the needs of most patients and would require additional procedures to cover the affected areas.
HAIR TRANSPLANT TECNHNIQUE 2: FOLICULAR UNITS TRANSPLANT
Follicular Units Transplant (FUT) technique is done by microscope magnification and magnifying glasses 3.5. We take the follicular units (which have 1 to 4 hair grafts) from the occipital region of the patient, since it has been established these areas are the ones practically permanent, and they carry their load and genetic behavior to the transplanted site.
Then these follicular units are subjected to a thorough analysis to determine the exact place where they will be transplanted, since for example, in the front line are recommended units with a single follicle for a more natural result.
It is worth mentioning that through previous and subsequent sessions with Diathermy or Dynamic Phototherapy, it is possible to improve the results, since this increases the scalp irrigation, and therefore oxygenation in the transplanted area.
In the FUT technique, we generally take the classic scalp strip in the occipital area, being careful to close the donor area meticulously to have a imperceptible scar.
The procedure is under oral sedation and local anesthesia blocking the main sensory nerves, this type of anesthesia is well tolerated, and allows the patient to be awake and collaborate with the changes in position that the procedure requires.
This surgery usually takes 5 to 8 hours, depending on the number of follicular units to transplant.
These general cares are recommended to take:
First. Sleeping in a semi-sitting position for 3 nights, to minimize the inflammatory process.
Second. Cold compresses and massage with the fingertips on the forehead to reduce lymphatic edema.
Third. Rinse with baby shampoo from the 2nd to the 5th day. Then regularly use shampoo containing minoxidil for an indefinite time to prevent the loss of the previous to transplant existing hair.
FUE vs FUT
Both techniques are effective. When undergoing a hair implant with FUE or FUT technique, Alopecia will disappear.
In both hair transplant techniques the grafted hair will not fall out, because this is extracted from parts of the scalp where there is no evidence of alopecia.
Despite the above, there are notable advantages of the FUE technique over the traditional FUT.
FUE hair transplant technique:
- Less invasive.
- The scars are imperceptible.
- Recovery is faster and is an outpatient procedure.
- Each follicle is implanted one by one manually to assure a natural look.
FUT hair transplant technique:
- Leaves a slightly noticeable scar where the follicle was extracted in some way.
- Recovery slightly slower.
- It provides slightly less naturalness.
